Mazda publishes two clearance figures for this vehicle and they split by wheel size rather than by trim name. It publishes nothing at all about approach angles or wading depth, which matters more than the number itself if you are asking this question because of standing water.
The 2026 Mazda CX-5 has 8.0 inches of minimum ground clearance on the 17-inch wheels fitted to the 2.5 S and 2.5 S Select, and 8.2 inches on the 19-inch wheels fitted to the 2.5 S Preferred, 2.5 S Premium and 2.5 S Premium Plus.[1] Both figures are unladen. Load the vehicle with passengers and cargo and clearance drops.
Mazda publishes no approach angle, no departure angle, no breakover angle and no wading depth for this vehicle. If you are reading this page because of Central Florida street flooding, the section below on what Mazda actually says about water is the part you want.
The split follows the wheel and tire package rather than the trim badge, and the taller figure belongs to the larger wheel because the 19-inch fitment uses a different overall tire diameter.

Mazda publishes both figures, 8.0 and 8.2 inches, in its 2026 specification documents. What it does not do is print a trim name beside each one. The mapping in the table above follows the wheel fitment, which is the only sensible reading and is how every source reports it, but it is our inference rather than a Mazda label.[2] Two tenths of an inch will not change a buying decision, and if it would, we will measure the specific car for you. For context in the compact SUV segment, eight inches is toward the upper end of what a road-biased crossover offers and well short of what a body-on-frame vehicle gives you.[3] It is enough for a rough driveway, a grass verge at a soccer field or an unpaved parking area at a Central Florida trailhead. It is not a rock-crawling number and Mazda does not present it as one.
Ground clearance on its own tells you less than people assume. What actually decides whether a vehicle scrapes on a steep driveway apron is the approach and departure angle, and those depend on where the bumpers sit relative to the wheels.
Mazda publishes neither for the 2026 Mazda CX-5. It publishes no breakover angle either. We checked the specification deck, the vehicle fact sheet, every 2026 press release and the owner’s manual.[2]
What Mazda does publish is the raw input to those angles without ever doing the arithmetic: a front overhang of 35.8 inches and a rear overhang of 38.0 inches.[1] A long rear overhang is why a crossover with plenty of clearance can still catch its rear bumper backing off a steep ramp.
Rear overhang is the longer of the two on this vehicle. If you have a driveway that has scraped a car before, that is the end to worry about, and it is worth trying on the slope itself before you buy rather than after.
If a specific driveway, ramp or dirt track is the reason you are on this page, take a demonstrator to it. Approach and departure angles calculated from overhang and clearance ignore suspension travel, load and the shape of the underbody, which is why manufacturers publish them for vehicles built to be measured that way and stay quiet for vehicles that are not. Fifteen minutes on your own slope settles it properly.
This is why most Orlando buyers ask about clearance, so it gets the plainest answer we can give.
Ground clearance is not a wading depth. They are different measurements and they are not related in the way people assume. Clearance is the distance from the road to the lowest point of the underbody. Wading depth is set by where the air intake sits, where the electrical connectors sit and how much water the vehicle can displace at a given speed before it stops behaving like a car. Mazda publishes a clearance figure and no wading figure at all.[2]
The 2026 owner’s manual is unambiguous, and this is the whole of what Mazda says: “Do not drive the vehicle on flooded roads as it could cause short circuiting of electrical/electronic parts, or engine damage or stalling from water absorption. If the vehicle has been immersed in water, consult an Authorized Mazda Dealer.” There is no “up to X inches” clause. The instruction is to turn around.
Water damage is also one of the exclusions in the New Vehicle Limited Warranty, which lists floods among the accidents and environmental events it does not cover.[4] A vehicle driven into standing water and then presented with a wet electrical fault is not a warranty claim, and that is a conversation we would much rather have on a research page than in a service lane in August.
What eight inches of clearance does buy you here is different and still worth having: a flooded parking lot you can cross at walking pace without picking up debris, a curb you can mount to get off a submerged lane, and a slightly later point at which water starts pushing at the underbody. None of that is a licence to drive a flooded street.
One thing from the manual worth carrying away even if you never enter deep water. After driving through any standing water your brakes will not work properly until they dry. Mazda’s instruction is to dry them off “by driving slowly, releasing the accelerator pedal and lightly applying the brakes several times until the brake performance returns to normal.” Do that in a parking lot, not on the approach to the next light.
Every 2026 Mazda CX-5 has an Off-Road setting in Mazda Intelligent Drive Select, and it sits slightly awkwardly beside what the owner’s manual says about where this vehicle belongs.
Mazda’s description of the mode is that it “prevents the drive wheels from spinning during off-road driving,” and it names muddy, sandy and deep-snow surfaces. Mazda’s description of the vehicle, in the all-wheel-drive section of the same manual, is that it “is not designed for off-road and rally driving” and that you should not “drive over rough rocky roads and river beds.”
Both statements are true and they are not in conflict once you read them as written. Off-Road mode is for a soft surface, not a technical one. A wet grass field at a youth soccer tournament, a sand track to a boat ramp, a washed-out shell driveway. Not a trail with rocks on it.
Hill Descent Control is standard as well, and Mazda describes it as holding a constant speed while the vehicle descends a steep slope. In this market it earns its keep on a wet boat ramp far more often than on a hill.
Our honest answer, from selling these to people who live here.
For a paved commute and a suburban driveway, any of the five trims is more vehicle than the road asks for, and the two tenths of an inch between the 17-inch and 19-inch cars is not a reason to choose one over the other. Choose on ride quality instead. The 17-inch wheel carries a taller sidewall, and on the joints and patches of I-4 and 408 that is the difference you will actually feel every day.
For a house at the end of an unpaved lane, or a regular tow to a ramp at Lake Monroe or the Butler Chain, eight inches is comfortable and the thing to check is your own approach rather than the number. Bring us the slope and we will bring the car.
And for anyone whose real question is hurricane season, the answer is not a taller crossover. It is leaving earlier and taking a route that is not under water. We say that as a dealership that would happily sell you something with more clearance, and we still mean it.

For a compact SUV it sits toward the upper end of the segment and is comfortable for an unpaved driveway, a grass field or a sand track to a boat ramp.[3] It is well short of a body-on-frame off-road vehicle, and the 2026 Mazda CX-5 owner’s manual states the vehicle “is not designed for off-road and rally driving.”
On soft surfaces, within limits. Every 2026 Mazda CX-5 has an Off-Road drive mode and Hill Descent Control as standard, which suit mud, sand and wet grass surfaces.
