Every 2026 Mazda CX-5 shares one engine, one transmission and one drivetrain, which makes the fuel economy answer unusually simple. How much of that estimate survives an Orlando August is the harder question.
The 2026 Mazda CX-5 is EPA-estimated at 24 MPG city, 30 MPG highway and 26 MPG combined.[1] Those figures apply to every trim. All five share the same 187-horsepower SKYACTIV®-G 2.5-liter engine, the same six-speed automatic and standard i-Activ AWD®, so fuel economy does not move between the 2.5 S and the 2.5 S Premium Plus.
There is no front-wheel-drive 2026 Mazda CX-5 and no hybrid, so the lineup contains no higher-economy variant to step up to. Mazda has confirmed a Mazda CX-5 hybrid for the 2027 model year.

All figures are EPA-estimated for the 2026 Mazda CX-5 with i-Activ AWD®.[1] The 19-inch wheels on the upper three trims carry the same rating as the 17-inch wheels below them.
Some third-party listing sites currently show another combined figure for the 2026 Mazda CX-5. The numbers on this page are the ones Mazda North American Operations published for the 2026 model year. When you are looking at a specific car, the Monroney label on that car’s window is the document that governs.
The 2026 Mazda CX-5 has a 15.3-gallon fuel tank.[2] Run that against the EPA estimates and you get the following.

Those are arithmetic, not Mazda-published range figures, and they assume you would run the tank dry.[2] You should not. In practical terms, a Mazda CX-5 in combined driving covers Orlando to Miami comfortably, or Orlando to Jacksonville and most of the way back, on one tank.
The 2026 Mazda CX-5 runs on regular 87-octane unleaded. Premium is not required and Mazda claims no benefit from it. Fuel below 87 octane can cause knocking and engine damage, so the cheapest pump at a station selling 85 is not a saving.
Across 15,000 miles a year at 26 MPG combined, the difference between regular and premium at Central Florida pump prices is real money for no gain. The filler door label is the authority if anyone tells you otherwise.
EPA estimates come out of a controlled test. Orlando is not a controlled test.
The U.S. Department of Energy and EPA report that running air conditioning in very hot weather can cut a vehicle’s fuel economy by more than 25 percent, with the largest effect on short trips and in stop-and-go driving. In a Central Florida summer the compressor runs from the moment you leave the driveway until you park, so this is the single biggest gap between the window sticker and the number on your trip computer.
Apply 25 percent to the 26 MPG combined rating and a hot-month, short-trip average lands nearer 20 MPG. Every gasoline vehicle in this climate does the same thing. Knowing that saves you a service appointment for a car that is working exactly as designed.
Dual-zone automatic climate control is standard on every trim, which means the system holds a set temperature rather than running flat out. Setting a temperature and leaving it alone costs less fuel than cycling between maximum cold and off.
What actually moves the number:
Two standard systems on every 2026 Mazda CX-5 exist to improve real-world economy rather than test-cycle economy. i-stop, Mazda’s idle-stop system, shuts the engine down when you come to a halt and restarts it when you lift off the brake. In I-4 and John Young Parkway traffic that recovers fuel you would otherwise burn sitting still, and you can switch it off if you would rather.
The 10.25-inch digital cluster shows i-stop engaging every time you come to a halt. Over a week of I-4 commuting the running average on the trip computer is the honest number to judge the car by, not the sticker.
The second is cylinder deactivation. Under light load at steady cruise the SKYACTIV®-G 2.5 drops to two cylinders. You will not feel it happen, and it is the reason an all-wheel-drive SUV rates 30 MPG on the highway.
One consequence worth planning for: i-stop cycles the 12-volt battery much harder than a conventional system, which is why the 2026 Mazda CX-5 uses an enhanced flooded S-95 battery rather than a standard one. Our service department tests batteries at every visit. In this climate that matters more than it does in most.
Fuel economy is not this vehicle’s strongest category. The 2026 Toyota RAV4 is now a hybrid-only lineup and returns an EPA-estimated 44 MPG combined against the Mazda CX-5’s 26.[5] If maximum economy is what you are buying on, a hybrid is the better answer and we will say so.

What the 2026 Mazda CX-5 trades that economy for is standard i-Activ AWD® on every trim where most rivals charge extra, a 2026 IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+ award,[7] and a chassis tuned around how it drives instead of around a test cycle. Whether that trade is worth 18 MPG is your call, and it is easier to make from the driver’s seat.
