Five seats, two rows, on every trim. The more useful part of this page is where car seats go, which positions take which kind, and the one check Mazda tells you to make that almost nobody makes.
The 2026 Mazda CX-5 seats five people in two rows. There is no third row and no six or seven-seat version on any trim.[1] Two front seats and a 40/20/40 split rear bench with three seating positions, standard from the 2.5 S to the 2.5 S Premium Plus.
For child seats, the rear outboard positions have full lower anchors and top tethers. The rear center position has a top tether but no dedicated lower anchors, so a seat with rigid connectors cannot be installed there. If you need three rows, the answer inside the Mazda range is the Mazda CX-70 or the Mazda CX-90.
Seat count does not change anywhere in the range. What changes is how the seats adjust and what they are covered in.

The rear bench is the same on all five trims: a 40/20/40 split with one-touch fold-down, independently reclining left and right seatbacks, a center pass-through and a center armrest with cup holders. The 40/20/40 split is worth understanding, because it is not a 60/40 bench. You can fold the narrow center section on its own and carry something long down the middle with a passenger still sitting either side of it.
The 2026 Mazda CX-5 is a two-row vehicle on every trim. No captain’s chair option exists, no third-row package exists, and Mazda’s own specification documents list one body type across the range: five passenger, SUV.[1] If a comparison chart shows a seven-seat Mazda CX-5, it is describing a different vehicle. Seat count is easy. Whether five adults fit is the question that follows, and Mazda publishes enough to answer it honestly.

Two adults in the back is comfortable, and 39.9 inches of rear leg room is competitive for a compact SUV. Three across is a school run rather than a road trip. At 55.6 inches of rear shoulder room the middle position is usable and narrow, which is true of every vehicle this size and is the reason the center armrest exists.[1]
The head room rows split by trim because the panoramic sunroof takes space out of the roof. It is standard on the 2.5 S Premium and 2.5 S Premium Plus and unavailable below them, and it costs 1.1 inches of rear head room. For a tall teenager who rides in the back every day, sit them in both before you choose.
The left and right rear seatbacks recline independently, which is unusual at this price and matters on a drive to Miami or Tampa. The narrow center section folds on its own for skis, curtain rail or a fishing rod.
This is the section most parents come here for, so it is written from Mazda’s own manual rather than from a general guide.

Mazda’s wording on the center position is worth quoting because it is precise and it is routinely misreported: child restraints with rigid lower connectors “cannot be installed on the center seating position,” while some seats with attachments on belt webbing “can be placed in the center position and will reach the nearest ISOFIX/LATCH lower anchors which are 500 mm (19.7 in) apart,” but only if the seat’s own instructions permit that spacing.[2]
Two more rules from the same section. Never attach two child restraints to the same lower anchor. And a seat with a support leg cannot go in the rear center position at all.
Mazda’s own suggestion for a third restraint is to use the center seat belt with the center tether while both outboard LATCH positions are occupied. Whether three seats physically fit side by side depends far more on the seats you own than on the vehicle. Bring all three and we will fit them in a car on the lot with you standing there. It takes about twenty minutes.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety rates this vehicle’s LATCH hardware Good with its extra-positions designation, which is the top result available. It measured the lower anchors as visible rather than buried, and needing only 0 to 2 pounds of force to attach.
Mazda also asks you to remove the head restraint for almost every child seat installation, with one exception: a backless booster needs the head restraint left in place. And it warns that driving with a head restraint removed is itself dangerous, so put it back when the seat comes out.
Mazda’s position on children in the front is unambiguous and worth reproducing before anything else: “Accident statistics reveal that a child is safer in the rear seat. The front passenger’s seat is clearly the worst choice for any child under 12, and with rear-facing child-restraint systems it is clearly unsafe due to air bags.” A rear-facing seat must never go in the front.[2]
There is no manual airbag on-off switch on this vehicle. The 2026 Mazda CX-5 uses weight sensors under the front passenger seat rails, and the system decides for itself.

Mazda asks you to do this every time and it takes five seconds. After installing a child seat in the front, switch the vehicle on and check that the front passenger airbag deactivation light comes on. If it does not, Mazda’s instruction is to remove the seat, switch the vehicle off and reinstall it. And plainly: “Do not seat a child in a child-restraint system on the front passenger seat if the front passenger air bag deactivation indicator light does not illuminate.”[2]
The curtain airbag stays armed regardless of what that light shows, which Mazda states explicitly. And the sensor can be fooled by things people do without thinking: luggage stacked on the seat beside the child, a rear passenger pushing back against the seatback, liquid spilled on the cushion, or an aftermarket seat warmer fitted to the surface. Two absences that shape how you should use this page.
The first is that Mazda publishes no seat-by-seat suitability matrix for the United States. The owner’s manual has a page with that title, but the table on it is headed for the Mexican market and is built on European regulatory categories that do not apply here. For a car bought in Florida, Mazda’s entire published guidance is one sentence: “Regarding child-restraint systems which can be installed to your Mazda, consult an Authorized Mazda Dealer.”[3]

The second absence is a weight limit. Many manufacturers print a rule about switching from lower anchors to the seat belt once the child plus the seat exceeds a stated combined weight. That instruction does not appear anywhere in the 2026 Mazda CX-5 manual. Your child seat manufacturer almost certainly publishes one, and in the absence of a Mazda figure that is the instruction to follow.[3]
A few practical notes from fitting a lot of these.
Rear seat air vents start at the 2.5 S Select. In a car that carries children through an Orlando summer, that is not a luxury item and we would put it ahead of most of the options list. A rear-facing child in a black cabin with no vent behind them is the single most common complaint we hear from parents in July.
Heated rear outboard seats arrive at the 2.5 S Premium, which matters less here. Ventilated front seats arrive at the same point and matter a great deal.
Rear USB-C ports are the other family-relevant trim step. Two front ports are standard everywhere; two more appear in the rear console on the 2.5 S Premium and above. If the back seat is usually occupied by teenagers, that is the line on the options walk that will keep the peace.
And the practical one. A rear-facing seat behind the driver costs the driver leg room in any vehicle, and 41.7 inches up front gives you room to give away. Come and set the driver’s seat where you actually sit, then put the child seat in behind it. That five-minute test tells you more than any table on this page.
